I did it to my HTC EVO awhile back. Youtube/Google is your friend. I'm guessing the process is different for each phone but there was software for mine where you browse to a website via your phone and it installs all the software and roots your phone

Each phone is a bit different. Just be sure you read up on it so you don't wind up bricking the phone. I have an original driod inc. and wanted to root it to use the hotspot but never got the nerve to do it. I also wanted to root to be able to remove all the standard programs that I never use (amazon music...etc). Good luck!

I was thinking about doing this with my HTC EVO but never found a good video to walk me through it. Plus I never took the time to dig into the pros and cons of it.
